What is Pareidolia?
Have you seen the man in the moon? A puppy in the clouds? The face on Mars? Sure, nearly everyone has had a “this looks like this” experience. Our imaginations are wonderful and powerful, and it’s always fun to see things in the clouds or a face on the moon. This is pareidolia.

Mimetolith
Let’s focus on a specific type of pareidolia. Mimetoliths. Through weathering and erosion a pattern is created on racks that my come to mimic or mime recognizable forms. A very famous example is the face on Mars. In 1976 the Viking 1 orbiter captured an image of the Cydonia region of mars. A part of this image looked like the face of a human. This image fueled decades of conspiracy theories, Ancient Aliens episodes, and pseudoarchaeology hypothesis. More than 20 years later other spacecraft visited Mars and captured higher resolution images which made it clear that it was just some mountains and hills on the surface of Mars.

Montana Megaliths
Another example of Mimetoliths would be the Montana Megaliths, which are some rock formations in the Boulder Batholith area of Montana’s Elkhorn Mountains. Some believe that these natural rock formations are actually man made structures or remains of man made structures. Tizer Dolmen and Sage Wall are a couple of examples in this area.
